The Handmaid's Tale Halloween Costume / Cosplay Tutorial & Shopping Guide

THE HANDMAID'S TALE HALLOWEEN COSTUME and COSPLAY GUIDE: Where to Find & Buy the Best Costumes Online (All Characters!)

If you're a fan of The Handmaid's Tale, then dressing up as Offred (or any of the other characters) for Halloween or cosplay in general would be an awesome choice! It would also make an incredible group costume- have fun with makeup and go as Janine, or gather up the troops to 'accompany' you as Nick or a Guardian. Don't forget Fred and Serena Waterford! I also put together a Handmaid's Tale PLUS SIZE Halloween Costume Tutorial.

Last month I posted about where to find the closest match for The Handmaid's Tale boots and shoes, and now since Halloween is right around the corner I've been searching the web for the best, most authentic looking, yet affordable, Handmaid's Tale costumes. Check out the guide below!

*Note: If you're buying The Handmaids Tale shoes / Handmaids Tale HALLOWEEN costumes on Amazon, definitely check out the free trial of Amazon Prime if you haven't yet. You get FREE express 2 day shipping. They currently have a promotion where it's totally free for one month- you don't have to pay anything up front like a lot of trials on other sites make you. If you're a student, you get Amazon Prime Student free for SIX months, and after that the membership is 50% off. If you're on public assistance (EBT, etc) there's also a Amazon Prime free trial & 50% discount for that! It's so nice not having to pay for shipping with the added bonus of getting your things lightening fast. I've been a devoted Prime member for two years now! Here are the links:

The Handmaid's Tale Halloween Costume on Amazon: A truly beautiful set!

I am INSANELY impressed with Voste's The Handmaid's Tale costume, which can be purchased on Amazon. One of my friends recently went to a women's march and purchased this costume, and it was incredibly accurate and looked perfect. It comes in three pieces: The Handmaid's cloak, dress, and hat/bonnet, so depending on your budget and needs, you can either purchase it as a full set for a discount, or just the individual piece you need. It isn't mass produced, but is made by a tailor so the quality is top notch. Link to Voste Handmaid's Tale Halloween Costume on Amazon .

The Handmaid's Tale Wings (The hat / bonnet worn by the women)

Possibly the most iconic piece of The Handmaid's costume is their hat / bonnet, officially called 'Wings' in Gilead. It's easy to find costume companies that sell white bonnets and caps (think the type you often see worn in 1600 / 1700's period era costuming), but The Handmaid's Tale writer Margaret Atwood was inspired by Old Dutch Cleanser packaging. Costume designer Ane Crabtree took Atwood's vision to television, making a Handmaid's Tale bonnet long, sleek and face obscuring.

Handmaid's wear two pieces of headgear: the inner bonnet (which is smaller and more traditional looking which goes underneath), and the outer wings. I think it's extremely important for the overall look of the costume to get the most authentic looking wings you can, since arguably they are one of the most important pieces of the Handmaid's Tale costume. Don't skimp on this one!

It would also be a good idea to grab a white, cloth bonnet to wear under the wings to complete the look. Not only will it make the costume look as realistic as possible, but practically speaking, it may get a bit tiresome and impractical to wear the long wings at Halloween parties. With the inner bonnet, if you get sick of wearing the wings you can take them off and the costume will still look genuine.

The Handmaid's Tale Red Cloak

The Handmaid's Tale Costume on Amazon via Spirit Halloween

Spirit Halloween via Amazon is now offering this costume officially licensed by the show. It appears that is is just the cloak, so don't forget your Handmaid's Tale Red Dress and Wings! They come in sizes Small through XL (If you're looking for a Handmaids Tale Plus Size Costume, we have a review page dedicated to that).

If you are looking for the least expensive option, and already have a red dress you can wear under (or if you don't have a dress, I found a match below), you can just purchase the Handmaid's Tale Cloak / Cape for around $16.00 from Acecharming Costumes on Amazon. Below is a photo the simple red cloak from the front and back.

The Handmaid's Tale Dress

The closest match I've found to the dresses worn under the cloaks by Offred and the other Handmaid's is by the company Auselily. At an affordable $ 16.99, matching the 'red wine' colored dress with the cloak is a budget friendly option for a Handmaid's Tale Halloween costume. An added perk is the dress looks super comfy, and even has pockets! Definitely something you could wear as an every day item and not just for Halloween! They also have the same dress in Serena Joy's color. Link to Auselily Handmaids Tale Red Dress on Amazon.

I know this isn't part of the costume per say, but when browsing I found this awesome Nolite te Bastardes Carborundorum Shirt I had to share:

The Handmaid's Tale Boots, Shoes & Footwear

As mentioned above, last month I searched the web far and wide for the closest match to the boots worn on Hulu's 'The Handmaid's Tale'. I'll put a couple options below, however, definitely check out the full blog post as it has an array of photo options and links. Serena Joy Waterford Dress for Halloween Costume

The Amazon.com store HalloweenPartyOnline is one of the only places that seems to have 'the' Serena Joy dress / Halloween costume in the EXACT blue-green shade she wears. Here is the link to Serena Joy Waterford Halloween Costume on Amazon.

Auselily on Amazon (who also makes a very close match to a Handmaid's dress) has a dress that could also work for a Serena Joy Waterford costume- photo is below in shade dark green. Link to Auselily Serena Joy Waterford Dress.

I just downloaded the audio book, and purchased a The Testaments in paperback (I like to follow along while I'm listening). I'm so excited, because the book is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. After I read it, I will be writing a full review. If anyone else would like to share their review, let me know- I'd be happy to post it. I love our little Handmaid's Tale family! Thank you, Ms. Atwood. I cannot even explain how happy I am to have a beautiful book, since I'm already feeling Season 3 withdrawrels. Seriously, how are we supposed to wait another YEAR?!

The Testaments: The Sequel to The Handmaid's Tale Book Summary / Description via Amazon:

More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results.

Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets.

As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.
