'The Handmaid's Tale' Offred's Baby Name: Serena is a THROWING SOME MAJOR SHADE!
Serena Waterford chose quite the name for Offred's baby girl! |
I just finished watching Season 2 Episode 12 'Postpardum' of The Handmaid's Tale. I don't want to post too much since it just came out and I want to give readers proper time to watch it before giving away too many spoilers (but seriously- stop what you are doing and WATCH THE DAMN EPISODE! This may have been my favorite so far!).
Last week (Season 2 Episode 11), June / Offred gives birth to her baby all by herself in the former commander's house, shorty after seeing Hannah [and while trying to avoid Serena Joy and Fred Waterford]. She names the baby girl 'Holly' after her mother.
Surprising absolutely no one, the most recent Handmaid's Tale episode opens with Serena Joy giving the baby a bath, meaning Offred's distress "come and get me" signal worked, and her baby is in the possession of The Waterford's. Ugh.
We soon learn the name Serena gave 'her' baby. Since everything in The Handmaid's Tale, from the costumes to the background paintings in the Commander's home have exquisitely deliberate meanings and hidden messages, I was absolutely convinced whatever Serena decided to name the baby would be a) very biblical in nature and b) have a meaning that alluded to something about overcoming or being patient and deserving, since she so often talks about waiting and praying for the baby and all the sacrifices she made in hopes God would bless her with a child.
So I was pretty shocked to hear that Serena named the baby Nicole. I didn't think that had biblical origins, but wanted to double check and Google the meaning. Nicole means 'victory of the people', and is 'the feminine version of Nicolas, Nicholas, or Nick'.
Oh.my.God- Duh! How did I not immediately notice this when watching the episode?!? Of course you couldn't get a baby girl's name closer to 'Nick' than 'Nicole'! We know that Nick is the baby's father, and Fred is quite aware of that as well. Serena, who is so intentional and meticulous with everything, clearly did this purposefully. Did she choose the name to further rub into Fred's face that he couldn't even father a child, and will be forever reminded of that by her name? Is this a little spoiler, or peek into a future episode or conflict? My guess is yes, and I think it's only a matter of time before it's addressed.
Serena the Shade Queen.
